Day 20 – 06/12/21

Wolf Creek, IL to Chester, IL – 62.9mi, 11.4mph, +3195 elevation gain

Brutal. Nothing short of brutal. The truck registered 99 degrees. I know the temp off the asphalt was much higher. I had to call it at 62.9 miles. I am 3… YES. 3 miles from Missouri but it was unsafe for me to continue in this heat. I was stopping to cool every 5 miles amd climbs werenot happening. I must be smart. Jocelynn made sure we increased my fluid intake and we took my core temp a couple of times too today. Needless to say we will start at 5am tomorrow.

We started in this amazing wildlife refuge. I took a couple of photos. But due to the heat my phone wasn’t happy today so not many pictures. I am hoping my GoPro got some footage.

I did forget one detail from yesterday. Illinois wins the dead snake contest so far. There were 10 dead ones yesterday. Today 8!!!! What on earth??? Kentucky is in 2nd with 7. Not sure if you know but I don’t like snakes dead or alive. And yesterday I kid you not we had one the width of the lane you drive in and it WAS alive and it’s head was up to strike. There was no where for Jocelynn to go so it got added to the “dead snake” tally. Yuck. The stuff bad dreams are made of for sure.

Now we are praying this heat breaks. I could have rode for days. I only had 3,100 in elevation change today. That’s almost like flat. 😂😂
