We didn’t struggle to get up early because we were both eager to get to the Badlands before sunset. It was a fun start to our trip going through the same little towns we remembered visiting back in 1983 on our first vacation as a family out West. I called my husband to find my old ’83 photo album and he sent me the photo of us at the town named Vivian and Kimball. (Vivian is our late G-Ma, and Kimball is our maiden name.) So many good memories! Love Kelly’s 1983 mullet. Today all she needs is long hair in the back and she would match her younger self in the photo of us at Kimball. LOL. We sang in the car all day. My voice box hurts. Trying to match Steven Taylor’s voice in ‘Dream On’ nearly caused me to go hoarse. Good times. My sister and I both needed that.
We got to the Badlands before sunset, and I didn’t even speed! I was thinking I would ride my bike a little in the Badlands, however, truth be told, I wanted to take pictures more than ride. It was a beautiful evening only 68°. Not quite sure how to describe this barren place other than pure rugged beauty. Did you know that rhinos use to roam this area? Crazy right?! Sunset was AMAZING! Glad I took some images.
Here are some photos we took while roaming the park. I could have stayed until it got dark to shoot the Milky Way, however we were hungry. We headed out of the park after sunset in search for food and a place to stay. We struck out on finding a place to eat dinner. Ugh. Snacks for dinner just isn’t the same as snack on a road trip. We ended up at the Econo Lodge in Wall, SD. Not bad at all. We would stay there again.
Night all, until tomorrow! T-Minus 6 days until we start cycling East!! Woohoo.
